BEIRUT, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The head of mission and force commander of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) vowed on Tuesday to continue working with Lebanese authorities by supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and people in southern Lebanon.

"In doing so, we pave the way for all political and diplomatic efforts to take root towards a lasting solution and a permanent ceasefire," Stefano Del Col said in a statement released by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon on the International Day of Peace.

Del Col addressed at a ceremony held at the UNIFIL's headquarters in Naqoura, southern Lebanon that UNIFIL and its troop-contributing countries are doing their best to support and protect the people of southern Lebanon amid the current deteriorating situation in Lebanon.

"We are helping local communities build capacity to halt the spread of COVID-19 pandemic through donating medical equipment, Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), PCR tests in addition to providing training to hospitals, schools and communities," the UNIFIL chief said.

Del Col also paid tribute to civilian and military peacekeepers for their sustained efforts to maintain security and stability in southern Lebanon and along the Blue Line.

On the occasion, members of the UNIFIL leadership team and LAF representative Brigadier General Maroun Kobayati awarded 28 military staff officers with the UN Medal for their contribution to fulfilling the Mission's mandate.
