Dubai car plate fetches record high at auction, sold for $10.3 million

DUBAI, UAE - A car plate sold in Dubai on Saturday for $10.3 million (USD), or AED 38 million (United Arab Emirates dirhams).

The price was a record for the sale of a registration number plate for a car in the emirate.

A total of AED 48,500,000, or $13.2 million, was raised through auctioning single-and double-digit car plates and exclusive mobile numbers, and another AED 1,950,000 $530,000) was raised through donations.

The auction was organized by the Dubai tRoads and Transport Authority, telco Etisalat, and Emirates airline.

'The Most Noble Numbers' charity auction sold four special car plate numbers, including the prestigious AA9 which sold for the highest price, and five exclusive mobile telephone numbers. Proceeds will go towards providing food aid for disadvantaged individuals and families across 30 countries during the Holy Month of Ramadan, in support of the '100 Million Meals' campaign.

Aside from AA9, double-digit car plates including U31, T38, and E51 were also highly sought after.

The special mobile numbers sold were: 056 999 9999, 056 999 9993, 054 999 9993, 056 555 5556, 054 5555558.

The 'Most Noble Numbers' was the second charity auction organizers have held to raise funds for the '100 Million Meals' campaign. The charity art auction, which displayed rare and valuable masterpieces from world-renowned contemporary artists, raised AED 36.6 million ($9.95 million) on Saturday, April 24.

Although the '100 Million Meals' campaign reached its target, raising AED100 million ($27.2 million) from 185,000 donors in 10 days, the mission of giving is continuing.
